Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 August 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information the Recess app (“Recess”, “we”,
“us”) collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. We designed Recess to
keep as much of your data on your device as possible.
Who we are
Recess is operated by Nicolas Chan. If you have any questions about this policy
or your data, contact us at
hello@recesshabit.com.
Information we collect
- Account information. When you sign in with Apple, Google, or email,
we create an account identified by an email address and a unique user ID. This
is handled by Google Firebase Authentication on our behalf.
- Your settings and onboarding answers. Your break interval, active
hours, and the multiple-choice answers you give during onboarding are stored in
your account (Google Firebase Firestore) so they can follow you to a new
device.
- Subscription status. Whether you have an active trial or
subscription is managed by RevenueCat and Apple. We do not receive or store
your payment card details; Apple processes all payments.
- Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand
how Recess is used: which onboarding steps people reach, whether permissions
are granted, when breaks are started, completed, skipped or left unfinished,
and which settings get changed. These events record counts, durations, and
fixed labels only. They never include the names of the apps you choose to
pause, camera images, body-pose data, or anything you type. Firebase also
records standard technical information such as device model, operating system
version, language, an approximate region derived from your IP address, and a
random app-instance identifier.
Information that stays on your device
The following is used only on your device and is not transmitted to us or
stored on our servers:
- Camera. During a break, the camera counts your exercise repetitions
using Apple’s on-device body-pose detection. No photos or video are recorded,
saved, or sent anywhere. Nothing from the camera is included in our usage
analytics.
- Motion & Fitness. With your permission, Recess reads recent
activity and step data from Apple CoreMotion to show you how much of your day
you spend sitting. This is read and displayed on your device only.
- Screen Time & app selection. The apps you choose to pause are
represented by opaque tokens provided by Apple’s Family Controls framework and
stored locally on your device. We cannot see which apps you selected, and this
information is never sent to us.
How we use information
- To create and maintain your account and sign you in.
- To save and restore your settings across devices.
- To provide and manage your subscription and free trial.
- To operate the core feature: pausing your chosen apps on your schedule and
lifting the pause after you complete a movement break.
How information is shared
We do not sell your personal information. We share limited information only
with service providers that help us run the app:
- Google Firebase,
for authentication and cloud storage of your settings.
- RevenueCat, for
subscription management.
- Apple, for sign in,
payments and Screen Time.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. You can
permanently delete your account and its associated cloud data at any time from
within the app: Settings, then Delete account. This removes your account and
the settings and answers stored with it. Your subscription is billed by Apple
and is cancelled separately in your Apple account settings.
Children
Recess is not directed to children and is intended for individual adult use. We
do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
We rely on Apple, Google Firebase, and RevenueCat, which use industry-standard
measures to protect data in transit and at rest. No method of transmission or
storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected
by updating the “Last updated” date above.
